When time and materials makes sense

This model fits situations where the scope cannot be determined in advance: junk removal jobs where you decide as you go what stays; work that only emerges during the job; or small assignments where a viewing would be disproportionate.

It has one substantial advantage: you only pay for what is actually needed. If it goes faster than expected, it gets cheaper — which is never the case with a fixed price.

The risk, and how to cap it

The drawback is obvious: you only know the final amount at the end. You can cap it with a cost ceiling (“Kostendach”) — an agreed maximum that will not be exceeded. If it becomes clear the ceiling will not be enough, the provider has to inform you and obtain your approval before carrying on.

Also ask to see how the hours are recorded. Reputable firms document start time, breaks and finish, and itemise the hours per crew member on the invoice.

What comes on top of the hourly rate

The hourly rate covers working time. Billed separately as a rule: vehicle costs or a call-out flat rate (“Anfahrtspauschale”), the disposal fees by weight, any skip hire, and special equipment such as a furniture lift. Ask what is included in the hourly rate — providers differ considerably on this point.
