Blue Zone Parking (Blaue Zone)

The Blue Zone («Blaue Zone») is the Swiss parking regime where you may park free of charge for a limited time using a cardboard parking disc. The permitted duration is far too short for a clearance, so you need either a day permit or, better, a temporary no-parking permit.
Why it is a problem for clearances
In the Blue Zone, parking with a disc is usually limited to one hour, in some places to an hour and a half. A clearance takes considerably longer. A vehicle standing there all day will be fined — and fined repeatedly if the wardens come round more than once.
On top of that: in densely built Zurich neighbourhoods the Blue Zone is often completely full during the day. Without a reservation, a truck simply will not find a space.
The three ways round it
First, a day permit for the Blue Zone («Tagesbewilligung»), which allows unlimited parking in one marked bay. Second — and usually the better option — a temporary no-parking permit, which additionally keeps the space physically free. Third, where it exists, the use of private space on the property itself.
Which option fits depends on the building. Properties with their own forecourt or underground garage make the question moot; in old-town and inner-city locations the no-parking permit is almost always the right answer.
A real-world example
For a clearance in Zurich-Wiedikon the first attempt is made with a Blue Zone day permit. On the day itself, however, not a single bay is free. For the second appointment a no-parking zone covering two bays is applied for instead — the space is clear, the truck stands in front of the entrance, and the clearance runs without delay.
