Einsiedeln, the monastery town of some 16,000 residents, lies at around 900 metres above sea level and takes us just under an hour to reach. The altitude matters in practice: in winter access roads and driveways can be difficult, and a clearance date may have to be moved if snow clearing has not caught up.
